WeChat Pay Merchant
Definition
The WeChat Pay merchant account is the acceptance-side account behind every WeChat Pay checkout. On the mainland path, it is an agreement signed with WeChat Pay, with a merchant ID bound to your Mini Program's APPID. Onboarding runs on the mainland and cross-border merchant platform pay.weixin.qq.com (branded "Powered By Tencent & Tenpay").
Three acceptance paths exist — mainland, overseas institution-partner, and overseas direct — differing in who can apply, required documents, review time, and settlement. Not sure which path fits? The WeChat Pay path selector maps entity, acceptance surface, and settlement-currency needs to a recommended path. All three ride the same entity and filing foundation: the same filed entity (typically a WFOE) that holds the ICP filing typically holds the merchant account.
What the WeChat Pay merchant account is
- The acceptance-side account — who may charge via WeChat Pay and how funds settle. On the mainland path, settlement goes to the merchant's mainland corporate bank account. On the institution-partner path, WeChat Pay pays the institution, which then pays the merchant. On the direct path, WeChat Pay pays the merchant directly.
- The account instrument that binds a merchant ID to your APPID. No WeChat Pay integration works — Mini Program or H5 — until the right path's onboarding completes and the merchant ID is bound.
- The gate where cross-border settlement choices are made once. Cross-border settlement offers 26 currencies, T+1 settlement, and an 800 USD minimum. The settlement currency is fixed at merchant-ID registration and cannot be changed later. The 2020-era published currency and country lists are listed, not confirmed current — verify with WeChat Pay before relying on them.
- The instrument that shares its entity foundation with ICP filing. The same filed entity that holds the ICP filing typically holds the WeChat Pay merchant account. Entity readiness is a prerequisite for both.
What it is not
- Not a Mini Program or checkout UI. The Mini Program or H5 vehicle is a separate decision. The H5 pay surface uses the same merchant-onboarding prerequisites and the same merchant ID. The merchant account is the acceptance layer underneath either vehicle.
- Not
pay.wechat.com. That domain is WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited's consumer-wallet site. Merchant onboarding happens onpay.weixin.qq.com. The two domains serve different audiences and different functions. - Not an entity or filing substitute. ICP and entity requirements still apply for mainland-hosted checkout. The merchant account rides on top of the entity and filing foundation — it does not replace either.
Why the WeChat Pay merchant account matters for foreign companies
No WeChat Pay integration works without it. When a global payment gateway fails behind the firewall, WeChat Pay is the canonical replacement — but no integration works until the right path's onboarding completes. Mainland review takes 1–2 working days. Overseas direct takes 7–15 days, notified by email. The institution path timeline is set by the institution.
Cross-border settlement choices are made once, at onboarding. Getting the currency wrong means living with it for the life of the account. Confirm the right currency before you register.
The entity foundation is shared with ICP filing. The same filed entity (typically a WFOE) that holds the ICP filing typically holds the merchant account. Plan entity readiness as a single foundation that supports both the website filing and the payment onboarding.
Common misconceptions
"We need a Mini Program to accept WeChat Pay." No. H5 pay works from a mobile web page using the same merchant-onboarding prerequisites and the same merchant ID. The Mini Program is one vehicle option, not a requirement.
"pay.wechat.com is the merchant portal." It is the WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited consumer-wallet site. Merchant onboarding — mainland and cross-border — happens on pay.weixin.qq.com.
"Any overseas company can sign directly." Direct-path eligibility is stated inconsistently across official pages. The FAQ references Hong Kong merchants. A 2020-05-06 country list names 64 countries. The integration guide references Hong Kong and the UK. Confirm current eligibility with WeChat Pay before planning around a specific path.
