Alipay vs WeChat Pay (Merchant Acceptance)
Definition
At the merchant-acceptance level, Alipay and WeChat Pay are two distinct payment-acceptance agreements a foreign merchant may hold — each with its own onboarding path, settlement terms, and technical integration. On the mainland path, both ride the same entity and filing foundation: the same filed entity (typically a WFOE) that holds the ICP filing typically holds both acceptance agreements. The Alipay vs WeChat Pay comparison that matters for a foreign company is not which wallet is bigger — it is which acceptance paths your entity qualifies for, and whether your audience requires one or both. Beneath both wallets sits a further layer — the card scheme, the network that routes card transactions between an issuing bank and an acquiring institution; that layer is covered separately in our UnionPay (银联) definition.
What the Alipay vs WeChat Pay comparison is
- Two separate acceptance agreements, not one. Alipay and WeChat Pay are operated by different companies, onboard through different portals, and settle under different commercial terms. Accepting one does not grant acceptance of the other. Each requires its own onboarding, its own merchant ID, and its own integration.
- WeChat Pay side: three acceptance paths and published settlement terms. WeChat Pay offers three merchant-acceptance paths — mainland, overseas institution-partner, and overseas direct — differing in who can apply, required documents, review time, and settlement. Cross-border settlement offers 26 currencies, T+1 settlement, and an 800 USD minimum. The settlement currency is fixed at merchant-ID registration and cannot be changed later. The published currency and country lists carry 2020-era timestamps — treat them as listed, not confirmed current. The full detail is in our WeChat Pay merchant and cross-border settlement term pages.
- Alipay side: a global merchant portal with an Antom redirect. Alipay runs a global merchant portal at
global.alipay.com. The portal states: "NEED HELP? For online/offline payment products, please visit our new website at www.antom.com." Antom is the current product surface for Alipay's online and offline merchant payment products. The portal carries no verbatim merchant-geography counts, onboarding steps, or fees accessible from the landed page.
What the Alipay vs WeChat Pay comparison is not
- Not a consumer-wallet size contest. "Which wallet has more users" is a consumer-marketing question. Merchant acceptance is an operational question: can your entity sign an agreement, and does the path match your audience? The two questions have different answers.
- Not a fee comparison. The Alipay global portal publishes no fee schedule accessible from the landed page. On the WeChat Pay side, fee terms differ by acceptance path — published for the mainland path, set in the merchant agreement or by the institution for the overseas paths — and are documented per path in our WeChat Pay for Foreign Companies article. This page compares acceptance and settlement terms, not fees.
- Not a settlement-terms equivalence claim. WeChat Pay's cross-border settlement terms (26 currencies, T+1, 800 USD minimum) are documented on this site from published sources. Alipay's settlement terms are not verifiable from the landed portal. Treat the two sides' settlement terms as separate questions, not as comparable numbers.
- Not a choice between one or the other for all merchants. The right answer depends on your audience and entity status — see the decision frame below.
Decision frame: both, one, or neither
The Alipay-vs-WeChat-Pay decision turns on two variables: who your mainland audience is and what entity you hold.
- Mainland entity (WFOE or equivalent with ICP filing). You qualify for the mainland acceptance path on both sides. Whether you onboard one or both depends on audience overlap. If your customers use both wallets, accept both. If your audience skews heavily to one wallet, start there and add the other.
- Hong Kong entity. You may qualify for the overseas-direct path on the WeChat Pay side — official pages state direct-path eligibility inconsistently, so confirm with WeChat Pay before committing. Whether Alipay offers an equivalent path for Hong Kong entities is not answered by the sources banked for this page; confirm through Antom (
antom.com). - Other overseas entity (no mainland or HK entity). The institution-partner path is the WeChat Pay route: you apply via an acquiring institution, with no direct agreement with WeChat Pay. Whether Alipay offers an equivalent path is likewise not answered by the banked sources; confirm through Antom.
- B2B or niche audience with low wallet penetration. If your mainland audience is narrow (industrial buyers, B2B SaaS with few mainland end-users), the acceptance overhead may not justify either wallet. Start with the audience assessment before the onboarding decision.
The WeChat Pay path selector maps entity type, acceptance surface, and settlement-currency needs to a recommended WeChat Pay path. The Alipay side has no equivalent selector on this site — confirm Alipay path eligibility through Antom or directly with Alipay. Alipay mini programs as a development platform are a separate product from merchant acceptance: Douyin and Alipay mini programs compared.
Common misconceptions
"We only need one — which one?" The question is not which wallet is better in the abstract. It is which wallet your specific mainland audience uses, and which acceptance path your entity qualifies for. For an audience that uses both wallets, the answer is both.
"Accepting WeChat Pay means we also accept Alipay." No. They are separate acceptance agreements with separate onboarding, separate merchant IDs, and separate integrations. One does not imply the other.
"The settlement terms are the same on both sides." WeChat Pay publishes cross-border settlement terms (26 currencies, T+1, 800 USD minimum — listed, not confirmed current). Alipay's settlement terms are not verifiable from the sources banked for this page. Do not assume equivalence.
"Alipay's merchant portal has the same published detail as WeChat Pay's." The Alipay global portal (global.alipay.com) redirects online/offline payment product inquiries to Antom (antom.com). The portal does not carry verbatim onboarding steps, geography counts, or fee schedules accessible from the landed page.

Frequently asked questions
Do we need separate merchant agreements for Alipay and WeChat Pay, or does one cover both?
Separate agreements. Alipay and WeChat Pay are operated by different companies, onboard through different portals, and settle under different commercial terms. Accepting one does not grant acceptance of the other. Each requires its own onboarding, its own merchant ID, and its own integration.
We have a WFOE with ICP filing — which acceptance paths do we qualify for?
A mainland entity with ICP filing qualifies for the mainland acceptance path on both sides. Whether you onboard one or both depends on audience overlap. If your customers use both wallets, accept both. If your audience skews heavily to one wallet, start there and add the other.
We are an overseas merchant with no mainland entity — can we still accept both wallets?
On the WeChat Pay side, the institution-partner path lets overseas merchants apply via an acquiring institution, with no direct agreement with WeChat Pay. Whether Alipay offers an equivalent path for overseas-only merchants is not answered by the sources banked for this page; confirm through Antom (antom.com).
Are Alipay and WeChat Pay settlement terms the same?
No. WeChat Pay publishes cross-border settlement terms: 26 currencies, T+1 settlement, and an 800 USD minimum — listed, not confirmed current. The settlement currency is fixed at merchant-ID registration and cannot be changed later. Alipay's settlement terms are not verifiable from the sources banked for this page. Do not assume equivalence.
Should the same entity hold both our Alipay and WeChat Pay acceptance agreements?
On the mainland path, yes. Both acceptance agreements ride the same entity and filing foundation: the same filed entity (typically a WFOE) that holds the ICP filing typically holds both acceptance agreements.
