H5 Pay (WeChat H5 Payment)
Definition
H5 pay is the WeChat Pay flow for mobile web pages. It lets a mobile website accept WeChat Pay without a Mini Program build. The customer opens a mobile web page in a browser — any mobile browser, including WeChat's in-app browser — and triggers the WeChat Pay checkout flow from that page. H5 pay is one of two acceptance surfaces for WeChat Pay; the other is native checkout inside a Mini Program. Both share the same merchant-onboarding prerequisites and the same merchant ID.
What H5 pay is
- A mobile-web checkout surface for WeChat Pay. "H5" is the industry shorthand for mobile web pages — the responsive site you build for any mobile browser, also viewable inside WeChat's built-in browser. H5 pay connects that surface to WeChat Pay. The customer opens the page and triggers the payment flow; no Mini Program build is required.
- One of two acceptance surfaces. The WeChat Pay merchant platform offers two surfaces for checkout: native checkout inside a Mini Program, and H5 pay from a mobile web page. The choice between them is a vehicle decision, not a payment decision. The same merchant-onboarding prerequisites apply to both.
- The same merchant account underneath. H5 pay uses the same merchant ID and the same onboarding path as Mini Program checkout. The merchant account is the acceptance layer; H5 pay and Mini Program checkout are the two surfaces that layer exposes. On the mainland path, the merchant ID binds to the APPID; for H5 pay, the integration surface is the mobile web page rather than a Mini Program.
- A fit for merchants that already operate a mobile website. H5 pay works when checkout lives on a page you do not rebuild as a Mini Program — a campaign landing page, a partner site, a content-driven product page, or a responsive site that already serves desktop and mobile. It also serves non-WeChat checkout paths: users who arrive through a browser link rather than through WeChat social sharing.
- Part of the hybrid vehicle pattern. Many brands run H5 as the broad-reach layer and add a Mini Program for the WeChat-native path later. H5 pay lets the H5 site accept WeChat Pay from day one; the Mini Program can follow when the WeChat-native conversion path justifies the build.
What H5 pay is not
- Not a Mini Program. H5 pay runs on a mobile web page. It does not require a Mini Program build, does not run inside the Mini Program shell, and does not offer Mini Program-native features like template messages or native sharing to chats and Moments. The Mini Program is a separate vehicle.
- Not JSAPI pay. JSAPI pay is the WeChat Pay flow inside a WeChat Official Account web view — it requires a verified Service Account (or a government- or media-type account) to apply for JSAPI payment permission. H5 pay is the mobile-web-page flow and does not carry that account-type gate. The two are separate integration surfaces.
- Not a separate merchant account. H5 pay does not have its own onboarding path. It uses the same merchant ID, the same agreement, and the same settlement terms as Mini Program checkout. The difference is the integration surface, not the acceptance requirements.
- Not an offshore payment gateway. H5 pay is WeChat Pay — the canonical China-accessible checkout replacement. It processes WeChat Pay only; it is not a global gateway that also handles non-WeChat payment methods. Card acceptance via the card-scheme layer is a separate surface from H5 Pay — see our UnionPay (银联) definition.
Why H5 pay matters for foreign companies
Global payment gateways fail behind the firewall. Client-side calls to global payment endpoints time out for mainland visitors. The checkout page renders, but the payment step does not complete. H5 pay puts WeChat Pay on a mobile web page — the same checkout step, completed from inside the mainland, without a Mini Program build.
H5 ships faster when a responsive site already exists. The same codebase serves desktop and mobile browsers, including WeChat's in-app browser. Adding H5 pay to an existing responsive site is faster than building a Mini Program from scratch. The hybrid approach — H5 first, Mini Program later — lets the China-facing site go live while entity and filing work progresses in parallel.
The same entity and filing foundation underpins H5 pay. The same filed entity (typically a WFOE) that holds the ICP filing typically holds the WeChat Pay merchant account. Mainland-hosted checkout adds the ICP filing window (typically 2–4 weeks with complete documents) on top of the merchant-onboarding timeline. The merchant-onboarding review takes 1–2 working days on the mainland path; 7–15 days on the overseas-direct path, notified by email.
Settlement choices are made once. Settlement currency is chosen at merchant-ID registration and cannot be changed afterward. Official pages list 26 settlement currencies. Settlement runs T+1, with a minimum settlement amount of 800 USD or equivalent. The published currency and country lists carry 2020-era timestamps — treat them as listed, not confirmed current. Plan the currency before you submit.
Common misconceptions
"We need a Mini Program to accept WeChat Pay." No. H5 pay works from a mobile web page using the same merchant-onboarding prerequisites and the same merchant ID. The Mini Program is one vehicle option, not a requirement.
"H5 pay is a different merchant account from Mini Program pay." It is the same merchant account. The merchant ID and the onboarding path are shared. The difference is the integration surface — mobile web page versus Mini Program shell.
"H5 pay only works inside WeChat." The H5 surface works inside and outside WeChat — any browser, any share channel. A user who arrives through a browser link rather than WeChat social sharing triggers the same WeChat Pay flow from the page.

The H5 surface works inside and outside WeChat — any browser, any share channel. A user who arrives through a browser link rather than WeChat social sharing triggers the same WeChat Pay flow from the page.
What entity and filing foundation does H5 pay sit on?
The same filed entity (typically a WFOE) that holds the ICP filing typically holds the WeChat Pay merchant account. Mainland-hosted checkout adds the ICP filing window on top of the merchant-onboarding timeline.
