Weixin Open Platform
Definition
The Weixin Open Platform is the developer portal that lets native mobile apps integrate with WeChat. The portal's own English-language headline states the scope: “Use the Weixin Open Platform to let your mobile apps support Share to Weixin, Add to Favorites in Weixin, and Weixin Pay.” The audience is mobile-app developers — teams building iOS, Android, or other native apps that need to call into WeChat from outside the app.
The platform's own terminology documentation also calls it the “WeChat open platform”. Both spellings refer to the same portal at open.weixin.qq.com. This page uses “Weixin Open Platform” because that is the portal's own English-language product name.
This page defines what the platform is, what its English-language documentation actually lists, how it relates to the other WeChat-family platforms, and what it does not cover.
What the Weixin Open Platform enables for mobile apps
The Open Platform's English-language Mobile_App documentation tree organizes its capabilities into the following categories. All documentation pages were accessed 2026-10-02.
- Share and Favorites — let users share content from your app into WeChat and save content to their WeChat Favorites. Documentation covers iOS and Android.
- WeChat Login — log users into your app via WeChat. The doc tree includes a development guide, scan-code login for website apps, and an authorized API call that returns the user's UnionID.
- WeChat Pay — accept payments inside your native app through the WeChat Pay SDK. Documentation covers iOS, Android, and a vendor service center. For the merchant-acceptance side of WeChat Pay — onboarding paths, documents, settlement — see WeChat Pay for Foreign Companies.
- Launching a Mini Program — open a WeChat Mini Program from inside your native app. The docs include iOS and Android examples.
- WeChat Smart APIs — on-device capabilities including image recognition, semantic understanding, speech recognition, and voice synthesis.
The documentation also includes an Access Guide section (iOS, Android, and WP8 references), downloads, FAQ, return codes, and a service market listing.
The critical framing: every capability above serves a native app that runs outside WeChat and calls into WeChat through an SDK — the portal scope is explicitly “your mobile apps”. The Open Platform is not the layer that builds experiences inside WeChat — that is what Mini Programs and Official Accounts do. The Open Platform is how an external app gains WeChat connectivity.
For the broader context on where a native app fits versus an H5 page or a Mini Program, see WeChat Mini Program vs H5 vs App.
The Weixin Open Platform vs the WeChat platform family
The developer documentation site (developers.weixin.qq.com) splits its English-language docs into distinct top-navigation sections: Mini Program, Mini Game, Official Accounts, Open Platform, Service Accounts, and Wechat Store. The separation below is definitional — each platform is described only by what its own pages and documentation say it does.
- Weixin Open Platform (open.weixin.qq.com) — capabilities for native mobile apps that call into WeChat from outside. Share, login, pay, favorites, smart APIs. The SDK crosses the boundary between your app and WeChat.
- Official Accounts Platform — the content and service-menu layer inside WeChat. An Official Account lets an organization publish articles, run custom menus, send template messages, and hold OAuth hooks. The Service Account doc tree covers server-side APIs: custom menus, subscription notifications, customer-service messaging, material management, user management, and web development. This is the nurture and re-engagement surface, not the mobile-app SDK.
- Mini Program Platform — the in-WeChat application layer. A Mini Program is a lightweight app that runs inside WeChat — catalog, booking, membership, campaigns — with no app-store download.
- WeCom (WeChat Work) — a separate enterprise communication product. WeCom is the staff-side tool that connects to consumer WeChat for messaging, customer-contact management, and company pay. It is not a developer platform for third-party mobile apps.
The four platforms are complementary. A global brand might build a Mini Program for in-WeChat checkout, run an Official Account for content nurture, integrate WeChat Pay and Share into its native iOS app through the Open Platform SDK, and use WeCom to staff the customer-service conversations that originate from any of those surfaces. Each product type carries its own account identifier — its own AppID, per the Open Platform's terminology page — and each section keeps its own doc tree.
UnionID: cross-surface identity
When the same WeChat user interacts with multiple products under one Open Platform account — a mobile app, a website app, and an Official Account, for example — each product assigns a different OpenID. The OpenID is per-product: the same person gets a different OpenID in your app versus your Official Account.
UnionID is the glue. Per the Open Platform's terminology documentation, UnionID is the “identity ID of WeChat users' products under the same open platform” — the same user has the same UnionID across different applications held under one WeChat Open Platform account. If your brand runs both a native app (registered on the Open Platform) and an Official Account bound to the same Open Platform account, UnionID is the identifier that lets you recognize the same person across both surfaces. OpenID tells you who the user is within one product; UnionID tells you it is the same person across products.
This matters for any brand that plans to unify user identity across a native app and in-WeChat surfaces. The Open Platform account is the entity that holds the binding — the same terminology page defines binding as attaching an Official Account or Mini Program account to the merchant's Open Platform account. UnionID is the mechanism that makes cross-surface recognition possible.
Naming: "Weixin" vs "WeChat"
The portal's own English-language headline reads “Weixin Open Platform”. Documentation titles on developers.weixin.qq.com use “Weixin” in page titles (“Weixin service doc,” “Weixin public doc”) and in body text (“resources required by Weixin Open Platform developers”). The terminology page uses “WeChat open platform” in its English body text. Both spellings appear in the official English-language docs and refer to the same platform.
“Weixin” is the product's own naming in its English-language documentation; “WeChat” is the spelling used on the terminology page. The two are used interchangeably in the English translation.
All English-language documentation on the site carries a machine-translation caveat: “The translations are provided by WeChat Translation and are for reference only. In case of any inconsistency and discrepancy between the Chinese version and the English version, the Chinese version shall prevail.” When citing specific capability names or technical terms, the Chinese-language documentation is the authoritative version.
What this page does not cover
This page is definitional. It explains what the Weixin Open Platform is and how it relates to the other WeChat-family platforms. It does not cover:
- Developer registration or app review. The English-language iOS access guide covers SDK integration only (openSDK version, Universal Links configuration, share legitimacy verification, SDK self-check). It does not document developer-account types, mobile-app registration steps, or app review requirements. No English-language primary source we have fetched states how a foreign company registers an Open Platform developer account or what the app review process requires.
- Pricing or tier structure. No English-language primary source publishes a fee schedule for Open Platform access or SDK usage.
- An explicit vendor partition statement. We have not found a single vendor statement that explicitly says “open.weixin.qq.com is for X audience; mp.weixin.qq.com is for Y audience.” The platform-family separation above is derived definitionally from what each platform's own pages say they do, not from an explicit partition claim.
- Android and WP8 access-guide content. The documentation sidebar references Access Guide pages for iOS, Android, and WP8, and lists downloads and iOS resources. This page does not describe the contents of the Android or WP8 guides, the SDK download inventory, or the page body of the Resource Center (which renders as a JavaScript shell). Those details require consulting the documentation directly.
- WeCom registration or developer setup. WeCom is a separate product with its own account system. It is defined on its own glossary page: WeCom (WeChat Work). This page does not re-derive WeCom's setup process.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Weixin Open Platform the same as the WeChat API?
“WeChat API” is not a product name in the vendor documentation. The official portal is the Weixin Open Platform (open.weixin.qq.com) — the developer portal for native mobile apps that call into WeChat from outside. The terminology page also uses the spelling “WeChat open platform” for the same portal. The Official Accounts Platform is a separate product — the content and service-menu layer inside WeChat, not the mobile-app SDK layer.
What is the difference between UnionID and OpenID?
OpenID is per-product: the same WeChat user gets a different OpenID in your native app versus your Official Account. UnionID is the cross-surface identifier — per the Open Platform's terminology documentation, the same user has the same UnionID across different applications held under one WeChat Open Platform account. If your brand runs both a native app and an Official Account bound to the same Open Platform account, UnionID is the identifier that lets you recognize the same person across both surfaces.
What does the Weixin Open Platform enable for mobile apps?
The platform's English-language documentation lists five capability categories: Share and Favorites, WeChat Login, WeChat Pay, Launching a Mini Program, and WeChat Smart APIs. Every capability serves a native app that runs outside WeChat and calls into WeChat through an SDK. The Open Platform is not the layer that builds experiences inside WeChat — that is what Mini Programs and Official Accounts do.
Do I need a native app on the Open Platform if I already have a Mini Program?
They serve different surfaces. The Open Platform integrates WeChat features — share, login, pay, favorites — into a native iOS or Android app that runs outside WeChat. A Mini Program is a lightweight app that runs inside WeChat with no app-store download. A brand can run both: the Mini Program for in-WeChat experiences and the native app with Open Platform SDK integration for users who engage outside WeChat.
What is “binding” on the Weixin Open Platform?
Per the Open Platform's terminology page, binding is attaching an Official Account or Mini Program account to the merchant's Open Platform account. Binding is the mechanism that enables UnionID — the cross-surface identifier that lets you recognize the same WeChat user across a native app, a website app, and an Official Account held under one Open Platform account. Without binding, each product assigns its own OpenID with no shared identifier.
Is the English-language Open Platform documentation authoritative?
Not fully. The Open Platform's English-language documentation carries a machine-translation caveat — the translations are provided by WeChat Translation and are for reference only. In case of any inconsistency between the Chinese and English versions, the Chinese version prevails. When citing specific capability names or technical terms, the Chinese-language documentation is the authoritative version.

Building WeChat connectivity into a native mobile app?
If your app needs WeChat integration — share, login, pay, or favorites — the Weixin Open Platform is where that integration starts. The backend APIs your app calls still need mainland hosting and a valid ICP filing; the same filed entity that holds your ICP filing typically holds the WeChat Pay merchant account and underpins any Mini Program or Official Account you run alongside the native app. We coordinate the entity, filing, hosting, and WeChat-ecosystem decisions for global brands entering China — start with the WeChat ecosystem service.
